The Cajun Wind Energy Project

An Opportunity to Explore Nearshore Wind in Cameron Parish, Louisiana

Cajun Wind is a proposed 480-megawatt nearshore wind energy project to be located off the coast of Cameron Parish to bring needed energy to Louisiana. The project will utilize existing infrastructure and bring substantial revenue to local and state government while respecting historic offshore industries, including fishing and oil and gas production.

The Mineral and Energy Board of the State of Louisiana took the first step on December 13, 2023 when they approved an operating agreement for Cajun Wind. This approved operating agreement marked the beginning of the development period that will take roughly a decade. The permitting process is thorough and is designed to provide space for in-depth analysis and planning to mitigate potential impacts.

When constructed, Cajun Wind will power equivalent to the usage of approximately 144,000 Louisiana homes while creating millions of dollars in short- and long-term economic opportunities and new property tax revenue that benefit all in Cameron Parish.

This project is under development by Steelhead Americas, the North American development arm of Vestas, the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer and leading service provider.
